Lili Jeanette Hellmann was the eldest daughter of the textile manufacturer Bernhard Hellmann and his wife Lina, née Singer. In 1896, she married the patron of the arts and later co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte Friedrich (Fritz) Waerndorfer. The couple lived in a villa furnished by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret MacDonald, located at Karl-Ludwig-Straße 45 (now Weimarerstraße 59) in Vienna’s 18th district. They had three children: Helene (1897-1938), Karl Richard (1899-1983) and Herbert (1905-1924). The family left the Israelite religious community in 1902 and converted to the Protestant faith. As a result of the bankruptcy of the Wiener Werkstätte in 1913, both spouses lost their assets. Fritz Waerndorfer emigrated to the United States in the spring of 1914, his son Karl Richard, who was still a minor, followed him in January 1915. Lili Waerndorfer remained registered in the family villa until September 1915. In 1916, she sold the estate to Martha and Wilhelm Freund, a couple from Baden, Lower Austria. She then moved with her youngest son Herbert to live with her mother at Stadiongasse 2 in Vienna’s 1st district. In the fall of 1919, Lili and Friedrich Waerndorfer obtained American citizenship and henceforth called themselves Warndof. In April 1924, their son Herbert died. In 1930, Lili and Friedrich Waerndorfer divorced. Lili Waerndorfer worked as a translator for English and French literature. She promoted her work in magazines such as Die Bühne, Mocca, Das interessante Blatt, Die Stunde and Der Abend. The Waerndorfer family's art collection was considered “extensive and top-class” with works by Gustav Klimt, Richard Luksch, Markus Behmer, Koloman Moser and George Minne as well as letters from Aubrey Beardsley. However, it had to be sold due to the family’s financial situation. In April 1934 and again in May 1937, Lili Waerndorfer offered Carl Otto Czeschka’s costume designs for Tristan and Wotan for purchase to the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry. They had been on loan to the museum since April 1934. However, the sale never materialized. In 1938, she donated a writing cabinet by Rennie Mackintosh to the same museum. She emigrated to the United States after the death of her daughter Helene who had been married to Ernst Bunzl. She left Austria on 30 April 1938 reporting her destination as Vicksburg, Mississippi/USA, where her son Charles Richard Warndof lived. Departing from Le Havre on the SS Britannic, she arrived in New York City on 8 May 1938. Protected by her American citizenship, Lili Waerndorfer was able to escape National Socialist persecution. Her family, however, remained exposed to the terror. Her younger brother, the art patron Paul Hellmann, died soon after the ''Anschluss''. His wife Irene Hellmann, née Redlich, was deported to Auschwitz on 6 March 1944, and was murdered on the same day. Lili Waerndorfer's nephew, Bernhard Wolfgang Hellmann, was also deported and murdered in Sobibor on 2 April 1943.
