Europa-Musikinstrumenten-Gesellschaft Theodor Sternberg was owned by the Jewish businessman Theodor Sternberg. He moved in 1937 from Gumpendorferstraße 109 to Mariahilferstraße 53 in Vienna's 6th district. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich, Sternberg, a Hungarian national, was able to flee to Budapest. From Hungary he attempted to sell his business in Vienna, which was being temporarily administered by Karl Honza by order of the Vermögensverkehrsstelle (Property Transaction Office). Honza sold eighteen musical instruments in December 1938 to the Technisches Museum Wien, to which Sternberg had loaned them in 1936. The Vermögensverkehrsstelle then approved the sale of Sternberg's business to the piano manufacturer Rudolf Reisinger. Sternberg emigrated to the USA in November 1939. After the war, the music business was restituted to him but he did not return again to Vienna. In 2007, 2008 and 2011, the Art Restitution Advisory Board recommended the restitution of the musical instruments found in the depot of the Technisches Museum Wien to the heirs of Theodor Sternberg. The items were restituted in May 2018.
